COMPUTER REFERENCE ASSISTANT
Part-time, 20 hours per week at the Main Library, 900 Library Plaza
RESPONSIBILITIES: In general, this position will assist patrons with the comfortable and appropriate use of technology in the library. More specifically, assist and instruct patrons, some with little or no computer experience, in the use of computer equipment in a Windows environment. In addition, aid patrons with the use of the PC Reservation system, photocopiers, launching of desktop applications, use of PC peripherals including printing and downloading. Answer directional and general informational questions. Keep computers, copiers, printers and scanners clean; stock supplies and replace paper and cartridges as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. While performing these tasks, refer patrons to a librarian when assistance is needed in formulating an effective search strategy, identifying an appropriate information source, evaluating results of a search or utilizing other library resources.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or any combination of education, training or experience which provides the required knowledge and skills. Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite applications (particularly Word), the Internet, social media, and email functions. Strong, successful record of customer service interaction. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, available library resources and their particular uses, including departmental and staff strengths. Solid communication skills, particularly verbal ability. Dedication to providing excellent customer service and the ability to work cooperatively with a variety of staff and public. Ability to work independently within established guidelines. Willingness and ability to continue to learn new technologies. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Ability and willingness to work the following schedule: Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and both days every other weekend with Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. When the library is closed on Sundays for the summer, the schedule would include another 5-hour shift in the week to make up for the Sunday closings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Readers’ Services Department is sometimes extremely busy, but the noise level is expected to remain low so that patrons can concentrate on their research. Generally a friendly atmosphere, though patrons using computers are sometimes stressed and can therefore be challenging at times. Ability to bend and reach frequently, lift up to 10 pounds infrequently, and lift up to 50 pounds assisted on occasion.
PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable.
