MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
Full-time, 40 hours per week at the Main Library

RESPONSIBILITIES: Work to insure the safety and comfort of library buildings and building systems. Maintain electrical, mechanical, fire detection and fire suppression, HVAC, and plumbing systems. Monitor BAS computer, evaluate alarms, and make necessary adjustments. Work with contractors on repair of mechanical systems, boilers, chiller plants, cooling tower, ice plant, generators, chemical feed water treatment and integrated controls. Troubleshoot variable air volume systems. Maintain PM/work order application, code compliance and logs for OSHA, NFPA, ADA, and ASHRAE. Other tasks as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and certificate program or equivalent training and experience. Minimum of two years field experience in specialized trade. Strong computer and analytical skills. Ability to work under pressure in emergencies for 15 locations. Valid driver’s license, good driving record and reliable transportation.
Good interpersonal skills for working with staff, contractors, utility and other service representatives. Physical stamina necessary for lifting more than 50 pounds 20% or more of work time. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Ability and willingness to work Monday-Friday 7:00am-4:00pm. Weekend hours and on-call rotation as needed. Schedule is subject to change.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Building trades certification or journeyman’s license desirable. Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.

BRANCH ASSISTANT -ABOITE BRANCH
Part-time, 20 hours per week

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide friendly, courteous, and quality customer service in working with the public.  Execute circulation duties ranging from customer interaction, registering for library cards, aiding the public machine use and operation, handling of materials, and other duties as required.  Provide basic reference service to the public, and aid the public in finding materials. Willingness to work with and program for teens is desirable.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system and general knowledge of branch operations, normally acquired through completion of tenth grade and three to six months on-the-job library training and experience. Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Ability to learn on-line systems for circulating books and for patron use. Good physical stamina is necessary for standing and walking up to 80% of the work time and lifting loads of 10-25 pounds.  Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with patrons over the phone and in person up to 80% of the work time. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Ability to work a typical schedule of Thursday 12:00-9:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and every other Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

COMPENSATION:

EARLY LEARNING EVENT ASSISTANTS - 2 POSITIONS - TEMPORARY
Part-time, temporary at the SHAWNEE BRANCH


RESPONSIBILITES:
This position will support Shawnee Branch staff’s implementation of an Institute for Museum and Library Services grant focused on building community support for and awareness of the role adults play in helping children enter school ready to learn. Accompany staff in working with English-, Spanish-, and Burmese-speaking adults and children in venues throughout the south side of Fort Wayne modeling and demonstrating positive, intentional interactions with young children. Prepare, clean and sort materials for distribution at events. Setup and teardown displays, including canopy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
MUST BE BILINGUAL, English/Spanish, or English/Burmese/Mon/Karen.  Comfortable interacting with people of all backgrounds, abilities and ages. Willingness to talk, sing, read, write, and play with children and adults with enthusiasm and humor. Strong ability to interact in a friendly, supportive manner with the public and fellow staff members. Cooperative spirit, reliability, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, and good judgment are essential. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability and willingness to work a variable schedule, including some afternoons, evenings and Saturdays.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
High school diploma and experience working with adults and children preferred.

COMPENSATION: This position pays $12.00 per hour, for a total of 100 hours (each position) from March-September.

SUMMER ASSISTANT


RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist regular staff with public service work and behind-the-scenes clerical routines and special projects. Summer staff will shelve books, check materials in and out, register patrons for library cards, process overdue materials, help patrons find library materials, and assist with the summer reading program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Ability to learn policies and procedures for circulating books. Must pass skills test over the Dewey Decimal System.  Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with patrons and other staff over the phone and in person. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Hours will vary with the assigned position. Public service positions may require evening and Saturday work.

Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable.

CHILDREN'S SUMMER ASSISTANT II


RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist the department manager and other staff with public services work and clerical routines. Help patrons find library materials. Answer simple reference questions. Take an active role in programming such as story time and special projects. Give library tours and prepare departmental displays. Assist patrons in using internet and educational computers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and one to two years’ experience working with children. Knowledge of children's literature, early literacy concepts, computer fundamentals, and library reference skills. Must pass Dewey Decimal skills test. Must have a genuine interest in and understanding of children and possess good interpersonal communication skills sufficient for supervising children. Basic knowledge of routine clerical tasks such as answering the telephone, typing, and filing. Good physical stamina is necessary for standing and walking up to 80% of the time worked and lifting loads of 10-25 pounds. High ability to deal positively and cooperatively with a wide variety of public and fellow staff members. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Must be able to work a varied schedule of days, evenings and weekends from June 1 through August 15, 2015.  (these dates are subject to change)

CAMP LIBRARY PROGRAMMER


RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serving free lunches to children up to 18 years of age.  Preparing and running a program after lunch.  Plan activities and educational games with lower elementary aged children. Encourage literacy skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidate will have analytic abilities sufficient for analyzing programs needs on a proactive basis and planning to meet these needs.  Good literacy skills and the ability to interact well with children.  Must have a genuine interest in and understanding of children.  Must also possess good interpersonal communication skills sufficient for supervising children, the physical stamina for standing during a free lunch program and reading program that follows.  Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.  The schedule will be a four-hour daytime shift Monday through Friday.  The program begins June 8, 2015 and ends August 1, 2015. (these dates are subject to change)

TEEN READER - FOR TEAM READ

RESPONSIBILITIES: Read and play educational games with lower elementary aged children in various sites within Allen County. Encourage their literacy skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a teenager, 16 years old or older. Must be able to read a children’s book out-loud (with expression), have a genuine interest in children,  possess the physical stamina sufficient for walking in parks, as well as the ability to lift at least 30 lbs.  Good interpersonal communication skills for interacting with young children, able to encourage participation by all the children in daily activities and willingness to be a team player are essential.  Must be available to work 20 hours per week: a varied four-hour daytime shift Monday - Friday. Project starts June 8th and ends July 31st, 2015. (these dates are subject to change)

ADULT SUPERVISOR FOR TEAM READ


RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with teens at various sites within Allen County as they read and interact with children of lower elementary level.  Also expected to interact with the lower elementary children.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Must have a valid driver’s license.  Good literacy skills and ability to interact well with children and teens.  Must have a genuine interest in and understanding of children.  Must also possess good interpersonal communication skills sufficient for supervising teens as well as the physical stamina sufficient for walking in parks, and ability to lift at least 30 lbs.  Must be available to work 25 hours per week:  varied 5 hour daytime shift Monday through Friday.   The Team Read Project begins June 8, 2015 and ends July 31, 2015. (these dates are subject to change)
